Nephritis

Nephritis is a kidney disorder caused by the inflammation of nephrons. Nephrons are small functional unit of kidney responsible for filtration of waste material. Nephrons consist of glomerulus and tubules. Inflammation of glomerulus is called glomerular nephritis and inflammation of spaces between tubules is called tubular nephritis. Nephritis can be acute or chronic. Children and young adults are at a higher risk of nephritis. It can be prevented if diagnosed in time.
Causes: Microbial infections, toxins, auto immune diseases especially lupus, kidney conditions are some of the causes.
Diagnosis: Physical examination, Blood test, urine tests, and MRI.
Symptoms: Puffiness in the face, Oedema in feet, ankle and legs due to water retention, reduced urine, excretion of proteins and albumin in the urine, pain in both sides of lower back, high blood pressure.
Treatment: Treatment is based on the cause. Penicillin and other antibiotics are recommended in case of infections. Diuretics may also be prescribed to improve functioning of kidneys. There are a number of herbal treatments that are effective in treating nephritis.
Drink a glass of carrot juice with little lemon juice and honey in the morning.
Eat banana and Avocado regularly. Potassium in the banana is useful in maintaining electrolyte balance.
Eat grapes or drink grape juice. Grapes are diuretic, promote efficient filtration and excretion of toxins and reduce inflammation.
Apples, Bhumi Amalaki, seeds of linseed, parsley and yam root are also effective in preventing nephritis.
Contraindications: Nephritis caused by autoimmune diseases and lupus cannot be prevented but certain precautions and diet restrictions reduce the problems. For example, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding smoking, alcohol, tea, coffee, aerated drinks, refined foods, chocolates, bakery products such as cakes etc, spicy and oily foods. Vegetables containing oxalates and salts such as spinach and radish leaves should be avoided.
