Alcoholism refers to the long-term health problems caused by alcohol addiction. Men who consume more than a couple of drinks a day and women who drink more than once day are at a risk of becoming alcohol dependent. Alcoholism affects the functioning of all the systems of body including nervous system. Most fatal accidents on the road are caused due to the failure of the nervous system and the result loss in coordination due to excessive alcohol consumption.

Symptoms: Alcoholics continues to drink even he/she loses control over the body. Other symptoms are the decrease in performance, memory lapse, fatigue, eye muscle weakness, digestive problems, nervous and cardiac problems, diabetes, osteopenia, cancer, cirrhosis, domestic and economic problems and erectile dysfunction. In females, alcoholism can lead to suspended and irregular menstruation. Babies born to alcoholic mothers are more likely to have birth defects.

Diagnosis: Blood alcohol level, liver function test.

Treatment: Will power plays the most important role in treatment of alcoholism. When withdrawing from alcohol consumption, alcoholics show many signs called withdrawal symptoms. These include nausea, loss of appetite and insomnia. Counselling and drugs are often recommended to reduce withdrawal symptoms and reduce the urge to drink. In addition to drugs, there are many herbs which can strengthen and cure systems of the body and help in quick recovery from such ailments.

  • Aloe vera strengthens the liver, cures cirrhosis and jaundice, and heals liver damage caused by alcohol.

  • A decoction of milk thistle seeds help detoxify liver.

  • Gout kola is the nerve tonic. It strengthens the nervous system.

  • Eating an extract obtained from Kudzu (Piermaria lobate) roots thrice a day reduce the craving for alcohol.

  • Rishi mushrooms prevents fat accumulation in the liver.

  • Ashwagandha strengthens muscular and nervous systems.

  • Increase consumption of carrot juice and juices of fruits such as grape, orange, pomegranate and pineapple. An increased intake of dates also helps.

  • The roots of Acores chalimus roots are often used for detoxification from alcohol, cocaine and other drugs. It stimulates the brain and controls withdrawal symptoms.

  • Passion flower is used for detoxification of alcohol and for treating insomnia and nausea caused during withdrawal of alcohol.

Contraindications: Consult a medical professional to monitor withdrawal symptoms. Pregnant women should not consume alcohol.
