Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder


Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common behavioural and psychiatric problem in children. It affects both boys and girls but is more common in boys. The symptoms of ADHD Include difficulty in paying attention, and hyperactive and impulsive behaviour. There are three types of ADHD, a hyperactive but attentive type, an impulsive type, and a combined type where all symptoms are observed. The problem can persist through adolescence and even adulthood. It can be successfully managed by efforts and support of psychiatrists, parents, teachers, a strong peer group and some medication.

Symptoms: Lack of attention, day dreaming, forgetfulness, lack of focus on any activity, lack of concentration, loss of memory

Causes: Exact causes of ADHD are not known. However, environmental factors and genetics are considered possible causes. Brain injury, consumption fast foods containing sugar, preservatives and artificial colours, nutritional deficiencies, smoking during pregnancy can also cause this disorder.

Treatment: The most common treatments include stimulants, non-stimulants, behaviour therapy and antidepressants. However, these drugs may cause side effects if taken for a long time. Therefore, herbal treatment is often preferable.

  • Ginseng is the chinese medicine which regulates energy levels, stimulate functioning of brain and induce sound sleep.

  • Lemon balm improves memory, has a calming effect and enhances attention.

  • Brahmi oil and almond oil strengthen the nervous system and improve memory.

  • Lavender oil reduces stress and induces sleep.

  • Pycnogenol from bark of maritime pine is recommended to improve attention.

  • Gingko biloba leaf extract improves memory.

  • Licorice root extracts control mood swings.

  • Kava roots helps tea reduces anxiety.

  • Valerian extract, chamomile oil, tea and coffee in limited quantity are also beneficial.

Contraindications: Medical advice is necessary for all herbal treatments. Excessive use of liquorice causes hypertension. Valerian extract can cause side effects such as dizziness and digestive disorders. Avoid use of excessive sugary products and aerated and carbonated drinks.
