Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is the body’s inability to use insulin or the pancreas not secreting enough insulin. This causes a rise in the blood sugar level. Type 2 diabetes is not insulin dependent; it can be managed by sugar level lowering medicines, diet control, exercises and lifestyle changes. However, if left untreated, it can cause many health problems such as kidney damage, eye problems including retinal damage and cardiovascular diseases.

Causes: Obesity, age, sedentary lifestyle, intake of high calorie and fast food, lack of exercise, blood pressure, drugs such as steroids and beta blockers (cause temporary diabetes) are few of them. Symptoms: Symptoms appear slowly. Excessive thirst, frequent urination, slow healing of sores and wounds, frequent infections.

Treatment: There is no cure but it can be treated by sugar lowering medicines along with insulin. Herbs can play a special role in maintaining sugar level and preventing other complications.

Herbal treatments:

  • Fenugreek seeds are one of the best remedies to control sugar levels. Soak a teaspoon of seeds in a cup of water overnight, eat the seeds and drink water in the morning on an empty stomach.

  • Boil mango leaves in water and drink the decoction in the morning.

  • Eat the powder of dried seeds of jamun fruit with milk, curd or water.

  • Mixture of an equal quantity of powders of Indian gooseberry, jamun and bitter gourd taken in the morning regularly reduces blood sugar level.

  • Drink onion juice, it helps to produce more insulin. Recent researches suggest that aloe Vera also reduces sugar level.

  • Infusion of leaves and fruits of Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa) contains corosolic acid, which can help maintain sugar levels.

  • Green tea and turmeric (which contains curcumin) and psullium also help maintain sugar level.

  • Use of milk thistle reduces insulin resistance in people suffering from liver problems.

  • Paste of rose geranium leaves with honey and lemon juice taken before meals can check the sugar levels.

  • Keep body weight under control and exercise regularly and quit smoking.

Contraindications: Drug therapy should be done under strict professional guidance. Regular follow ups and measurement of sugar levels are necessary to prevent complications.
